About Compas

Compas, also known as kompa, is a modern méringue dance music genre from Haiti. It was popularized by Nemours Jean-Baptiste in the 1950s with his band Ensemble Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Compas quickly spread throughout the Caribbean due to frequent tours by Haitian bands and has since become the dominant music in places like Dominica and the French Antilles.
